Aquilla “Quill” King founded King’s Sawmill in 1994 at just 21 years old. In the beginning, it was simply Quill, two horses, a logging cart, and a chainsaw. He built the business by knocking on doors & asking landowners if they had timber to harvest, hauling approximately 3,000 board feet of logs each day to local sawmills.
As demand increased, Quill continued investing in equipment and expanding operations. To secure financing for some of his early purchases, he used his horse, buggy, and hunting guns as collateral for a loan. In 1999, he built King’s Sawmill and began processing Appalachian hardwoods at his own facility.
When a fire destroyed the sawmill in 2007, the decision was made to rebuild and continue moving forward.
King’s Sawmill now produces more than six million board feet of lumber annually and has grown to include logging crews, an excavating division, and a retail yard offering mulch, wood chips, and sawdust for livestock bedding.
